abstract = "The present study aims to analyze the growth of urban sprawl in
the metropolitan areas of S{\~a}o Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Belo
Horizonte, using data from the Defense Meteorological Satellite
and the Operational Linescan System sensor, combined with NDVI
data from the MOD13A3 sensor. Scenes from 2001 to 2013 were
acquired for the three metropolitan regions and by means of
processing methods, had its urban sprawl analyzed. The saturation
originated from the urban lights was corrected with the VANUI
index, which correlates vegetation data with the nighttime light.
The results showed a tendency of growth on all the studied sites,
especially in the case of the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte.
This study can help predict future changes in the landscape as
well as to use nighttime light data as a tool for more studies to
come. The nighttime light data showed itself to be useful in
studies concerned urban areas, when applied with the VANUI
                         index.",
